What AI Means for Small Business Websites

You can't scroll through any tech news without hitting an AI headline. AI is revolutionizing everything. AI is coming for your job. AI will build your website for you. AI, AI, AI.
As a small business owner, you're probably wondering: should I care? Is this relevant to my website? Am I falling behind if I'm not using AI?
Let me cut through the noise with some honest perspective — including the parts of this conversation the marketing tends to skip.
What AI Is Actually Doing Right Now
First, let's acknowledge what's real. AI tools have genuinely improved in the past few years. They can help with things like generating first-draft content, suggesting keywords for SEO, powering smarter chatbots, analyzing customer behavior patterns, and automating repetitive tasks.
AI adoption among small businesses jumped from 39% in 2024 to 55% in 2025—a 41% increase in just one year. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce reports that 58% of small businesses now use generative AI in some capacity, up from just 23% in 2023.
Among businesses with 10-100 employees, usage jumped from 47% to 68% year-over-year. Content marketing is the most popular use case.
So the adoption is real. What the adoption numbers don't tell you is what all of this costs — and not just in subscription fees.
The Costs the Hype Leaves Out
Every AI response is generated in a data center — a warehouse of computers running 24/7. The industry likes to talk about these facilities in abstractions. The people who live near them don't have that luxury. Here's what the marketing never mentions, with receipts.
The Power Bill — Yours, Specifically
You are helping pay for this. U.S. residential electricity prices jumped 7.1% in 2025 — more than double the inflation rate — and topped 20% in some states, according to federal data. The data-center building boom isn't the only cause, but analysts, regulators, and grid monitors keep naming it as a major one. A Bloomberg analysis found wholesale power prices at grid locations near data-center clusters rose as much as 267% over five years — and while wholesale isn't the same as your monthly bill, it feeds directly into the supply portion of it. In the Baltimore area, average residential bills jumped more than $17 a month after a record capacity auction that the grid's own independent market monitor tied to data-center load growth.
Legislative reviews and university researchers have warned that households and small businesses can end up bearing the grid-upgrade costs that giant customers create. Utilities and tech companies dispute how much of the increase belongs to them — but in the regions with the most data centers, the people watching the markets keep pointing at the same driver, and nearly three-quarters of Virginia voters now blame the facilities for their rising bills. If you run a storefront, remember: your business pays those same rising rates.
The Noise Next Door
Data centers run industrial cooling equipment around the clock, and neighbors describe the result as a hum that never stops — "a jet engine never turning off," in one resident's words. In Northern Virginia, the epicenter of the boom, sound measured on residential property near complained-about facilities registered 40 to 59 decibels — constant, day and night. A 2024 Virginia legislative review found that almost one-third of the state's data centers sit within 200 feet of residentially zoned property. Most local noise ordinances were written for loud parties, not permanent industrial drone, so complaints often go nowhere — which is why residents in multiple states are now organizing, cities like Chandler, Arizona have rejected new facilities after years of pushback, and class-action attorneys have started gathering residents' stories.
The Water
Cooling those servers consumes vast quantities of water — often drawn from the same supplies communities drink from and farms irrigate with. Researchers studying data-center health impacts warn that this consumption can worsen local water insecurity, and water contamination concerns now appear alongside noise in resident lawsuits and proposed state disclosure laws. A peer-reviewed study published in 2026 linked the air, noise, and water impacts of data centers to elevated long-term health risks for nearby residents — respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease, and mental-health strain among them. As one Prince William County resident put it: "We have a full-blown crisis on our hands."
People aren't just enduring this — they're documenting it. Environmental advocate Erin Brockovich (yes, that Erin Brockovich, of the $333 million PG&E groundwater case) has turned her attention to data centers: in 2025 she launched the Brockovich AI Data Center Reporting map (opens in a new tab), a free public map of AI data centers operating, under construction, and proposed across the U.S. — overlaid with concerns reported by the people who actually live near them. Thousands of residents have added reports and photos, and it's updated daily. In her words: "Real people, self-reporting." If a data center is proposed anywhere near you, look at that map before the ground breaks — and add your own pin if you have something to report.
The Human Bill
These systems don't learn manners on their own. Behind most large AI models is a workforce of data labelers and content moderators — often in low-wage regions, sometimes reviewing genuinely disturbing material so the model won't repeat it. And the training data itself is largely the work of writers, artists, photographers, and programmers whose material was collected from the internet without their consent or compensation. When an AI writes "in the style of" someone, that style came from somewhere.
The Reliability Bill
AI makes mistakes with complete confidence. It can produce incorrect information — about your industry, your legal obligations, even your own business — in fluent, authoritative prose. If you publish AI-written content without checking it, its mistakes become your mistakes, under your business's name.
When a tool is free or nearly free, these costs didn't disappear. They just landed on someone else's electric bill, someone else's water supply, and someone else's uncredited work.
Where AI Can Genuinely Help
None of this means the technology is useless to you. Used deliberately, in small doses, there are practical applications that can make sense:
- Brainstorming and first drafts: AI can help you get past a blank page — as long as the final words are yours
- Basic chatbots: handling routine questions and routing inquiries, so real messages reach a real person faster
- Pattern-spotting: surfacing trends in your data that you might not have time to find manually
Notice the shape of that list: AI as an assistant to a human, never a replacement for one.
Where It Falls Short
- AI-generated content is generic: it can produce text, but it doesn't know your business, your customers, or your community. It doesn't have your voice
- AI websites are templates with extra steps: those "build a website with AI in 5 minutes" tools generate the same generic layouts everyone else gets
- AI can't replace strategy: knowing what your website should accomplish requires human understanding of your business
The Human Advantage
Here's an interesting trend: as AI becomes more common, human-created content is becoming more valuable. Authenticity stands out.
Small businesses have always had an advantage here. You're not a faceless corporation. You're a real person serving real people in your community. Your website should reflect that.
A custom-crafted website with genuine personality will always outperform a generic AI-generated one—because it connects with people on a human level. That's something AI can't replicate.
Informed Advice for Small Business Owners
So what should you actually do? Here's my honest advice:
- Don't panic. You don't need to overhaul everything because AI exists. Your website can be effective without any AI features at all.
- Ask whether the task needs AI at all. A template, a checklist, or twenty minutes of your own writing often does the job with none of the costs. "Could AI do this?" is the wrong question — "is AI the right tool for this?" is the one that saves you money and headaches.
- If you use it, use it deliberately. Small doses for specific tasks, with a human reviewing everything before it ships. Experiment with one thing before committing to major changes.
- Be skeptical of "AI-powered" marketing. Everyone's slapping "AI" on their products now. Ask what it actually does for you — and what data it was trained on. A vendor who can't answer either question plainly has answered both.
- Focus on fundamentals first. A fast, mobile-friendly, accessible website with clear messaging will always outperform a slow, confusing one—regardless of how much AI is involved.
- Keep it human. Your customers want to connect with a person, not a language model. If a tool helps you say it, fine — but make sure it's still you talking.
The Bottom Line
AI is a tool — but unlike most tools in your kit, this one has costs that land on other people's electric grids, other people's water supplies, and other people's uncredited work. That doesn't automatically make using it wrong. It does mean the honest posture is informed use or deliberate non-use, never default use because the marketing said so.
It can help with efficiency. It can't replace the human creativity, strategic thinking, and authentic connection that make websites truly effective. Those stay yours.
